ENDLESS ABACUS(1992)

An abacus is a tool for calculation limited to those who have the skill to use it. Each abacus bead represents a numeral. The frame is designed to limit the movement of the beads, creating an ascribed mechanism for the system. I created an endless, frameless abacus that looped around the walls in a museum. Boundless and infinite, the tool is transformed in form and released from its designated function. By the simple act of expanding and connecting the two edges of the abacus, the dissolution of its ‘boundaries’ or limits becomes an expression of breaching formal constraints within a limited sphere.
