Born in 1967 in Japan, Toyoshima obtained an MFA from Tokyo University of the Arts. She has had a number of solo exhibitions and has participated in numerous group exhibitions and international residencies. Toyoshima’s artistic concern is with the various forms of systems and regulated values that contemporary society dictates, observes, and unconsciously internalizes.
By experimenting with various everyday objects, commodities, and spaces, she conceptually investigates the social and cultural systems that are taken for granted, e.g. measurement, finance, color, or counting, in order to reveal how such systems influence the constructs of thought and action. She explores new realms of meaning and ideas by manipulating and intervening with contexts, boundaries, forms, and approaches.
