Jigsaw Puzzle (1994-)

Using thousands of pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, I connect them randomly in a line rather than a picture. Attaching one piece to the next to form a line defies the order that the pieces are meant to be reconstructed. The resistance to create a picture allows for freedom to create a completely different visual experience. The predetermined image becomes completely splintered or ‘atomized’ rather than integrated. Pieces meant to lock together in a grid to form a solid rectangular panel become extensible as a line. The curvatures on the line formed are dictated by how the curves and tabs I force to fit together meander as well as by the parameters of the gallery in which they are installed. By changing the ‘logic’ in forming the puzzle, recreation becomes a different kind of creation, allowing latent forms inherent in the possibilities of the pieces to materialize.
