Strew Life Preserver（1996）

I chose a material, refering to an old saying; 'A drowning man will grasp at a straw'.
I bought a life preserver at a shop.
I dissolved and scraped out the flotation agent (polyethylene) in it with a solvent (paint thinner).
After that I packed straw in it, and glued the outside of the canvas colored red.Finally I could hide the contained straw.

I put the life preserver on the floor in a gallery as a symbol of 'the power to save'.
This process, this substitution, became 'art'.
