Fill in the blank (1989-1990)
Multiple choice test sheets condition or restrict our expression. The confines of blank spaces do not accommodate mutable shades of viewpoints. We are constrained to communicate by filling in the preordained spaces of ovals, circles, or squares. It could be said that there is an ‘inside’ and ‘outside’ for each blank space. Rather than fill in these spaces, I subvert the purpose of the sheet by shading the expanse of the sheet outside of the blanks. I try to go beyond the dictates of the test sheet as a means of self-expression within its limited confines.
