I chose a material, refering to an old saying; 'A drowning man will grasp at a straw'.
I bought a life preserver at a shop.
I dissolved and scraped out the flotation agent (polyethylene) in it with a solvent (paint thinner).
After that I packed straw in it, and glued the outside of the canvas colored red. Finally I could hide the contained straw.\\

I constructed the literal translation into material of the old saying, “A drowning man will grasp at a straw.” Using paint thinner as a solvent, I dissolved and scraped out the flotation agent (polyethylene) in a life preserver. I then packed it with straw and painted the exterior canvas red. I placed the life preserver with the concealed straw on the gallery floor as a symbol of ‘the power to save.’ The process of transliteration through substitution is the artwork.
