I became an Individual investor by opening an account at each of the big four Japanese securities firms in November 1996.
I have been investing my personal funds, by purchasing minimum blocks of shares of certain companies. I have kept on collecting their fluctuating stock.
I have kept on publicizing the records at my exhibitions.
I named myself; an extremely poor investor who is collecting a small share of expensive stock.
I hope to finally invest in stocks from all the joint-stock companies in the world.
(*Most of the stocks I purchased initially, named 'MINI STOCK' or 'Petit STOCK', were stocks some securities firms had been selling; it's stocks were sold at 10% of the normal price per stock, but did not give you shareholder's rights at that point. Since I did not have enough personal funds, I began to buy them. In this case, I will be an official stockholder step by step when I get the remaining 90%.)\\

In November 1996, I became an individual investor by opening an account at four of the largest securities firms in Japan. I have been investing my personal funds through the purchase of minimum blocks of shares at each company. I have publicized records of the fluctuating stocks I own in exhibitions. As an extremely poor investor collecting a very small share of expensive stock, my ownership of these ‘mini stocks’ or ‘petit stocks’ purchased at 10% of the normal price per stock does not give me shareholder’s rights. My incremental purchases over the years will hopefully make me an official stockholder once I have fully purchased each stock at 100% of their actual cost.

I have declared that these stocks will be frozen throughout my lifetime. I will not buy or sell to gain a profit. I will not resell. The purpose of this project is not speculation but to keep these stocks for the rest of my life. As an ongoing project, I periodically include records of these stocks in my exhibitions to show its progression. The statements of account issued by the companies and reported on the online financial portfolios of my private investments are made open to the public through these exhibitions.

I handle the 'investment' in stocks as a 'creative' practice that has the same meaning as art; I get an opportunity to be included in, and affected by global economies.
The fluctuation of the stocks will be publicized as a change in my own life.\\

to:

I treat the investment in stocks as a creative practice, as it allows me to be included in, as well as be affected by, global economies. The publicized fluctuation of the stocks reflects these specific changes in my life. By participating in this system, I am logically part of these companies. Likewise, these companies’ activities, products, services, and ethics could be viewed as belonging to me, to be connected to me. These stocks are like the medium of my expression, my artistic intent. As an artist deciding to participate in the stock market, I become part of how the stock prices fluctuate. It could be said that the stock market is an ‘art’ collective by intent. To use the stock market is a way of gauging the individual’s limitations and degree of influence on society. The individual in the collective becomes defined, and by default could be positioned against the corporate collective. The individual and the collective are socially interdependent both harmoniously and discordantly. This system of correlation is what I observe and treat as an art concept.

re: what made me to start, how did this idea came up in my mind.
This concept was based on my study of a famous Japanese civil lawsuit, named the ‘one-stock movement’ in the Minamata disease case that triggered a consumer movement in 1970. A local group of citizens suffering from effects of mercury poisoning decided to gain access to control of the company that was poisoning them. They each bought a portion of the company’s stock, seizing enough shareholder’s control to influence the company’s decisions. Through their example, I see a method of ‘expression’ in society—a way of ‘playing,’ ‘expressing,’ and ‘living’ in society beyond the institutional art format.

I first thought about this concept by studying a famous Japanese civil law suit, named 'one stock movement' in the Minamata disease case that was a consumer movement in 1970.
A local group of citizens that were suffering from the effects of mercury poisoning decided to gain control of the company that was poisoning them.
They each bought a portion of the company's stock, and therefore seized enough control to affect the company's decisions. Through their example, I could see a method of 'expression' in this society, as if I was following the system in our society. It is a way of 'playing', 'expressing' and 'living' in society without an institutional 'art' format. I then wanted to present it as in 'art'.

re: what made me to start, how did this idea came up in my mind. I then wanted to present it as in 'art'.

re: action I became an Individual investor by opening an account at each of the big four Japanese securities firms in November 1996. In this case, I will be an official stockholder step by step when I get the remaining 90%.)

re: my declaration I will keep them all my life, and I declare that the stocks thus obtained will be frozen all my life. I do not buy and sell in order to gain a profit. Once I have purchased stock, I will not resell them. The purpose of this project is not speculation but to proceed with these stocks for the rest of my life. This works is an ongoing project, and I will have been inserting them in my exhibitions in the future, to show its progress.

re: way to open to the public These procedures of this private investment, all of the stocks, have been kept open to the public through the statements issued by the companies and displayed on my on-line financial portfolio on the Internet at exhibitions in which I participate.

re:meaning I handle the 'investment' in stocks as a 'creative' practice that has the same meaning as art; I get an opportunity to be included in, and affected by global economies. The fluctuation of the stocks will be publicized as a change in my own life.

By Investing in this system, logically I am a part of the companies, and at the same time, the companies' activities and their products and services and their ethics would be said to belong to me, to be connected with 'me'. This Investment in stocks is like the material product of my expression, as an ART, an individual artist, a way of self-recognition. It is the artist's decision to become part of the stock prices, to be included in the stock market. The artist's decisions influence the stock market. Try to imagine; all the shareholders in the world are 'ARTISTS'. It could be said that the 'stock market' is an 'art' by collective intent.

To use the system of the stock market is to watch a reflection of the individual's limitations and degree of influence on society and it is a way to touch the systems inherent in society. In this manner, the individual in the collective becomes defined, positioned against the corporate collective. The individual and the collective work together as in society, both harmoniously and discordantly. The individual has the ability to influence the collective and be influenced by the collective; we can watch the 'Correlation' between the collective and the individual. This system of correlation is what I have been gazing at, treating as my concept of 'art'.
